what do you do with a broken guitar string?
so today i went to guitar lessons [i have an acoustic] and i told my teacher i wouldnt be comming back soon because i was just too busy but i would come back in the summer.
he gave me stuff i could work on and he said i should try to learn the intro to With Arms Wide Open by Creed. so i got home and i found out i had to re-tune it so the strings were DBGDAE.
so i was tuning the E to a D and the string broke. I really almost cried cause i was so sad and now i dont know what the heck to do. i feel really stupid because i never really had enough lessons to learn how to restring it and retune it. the farthest we got in my lessons was major and minor chords, bar chords, suspending chords and arpeggiating chords and he said i was doing really well.
this happens alot right?
what do i do to get a new string?
who can re-string it for me?

Take your guitar to your local music (instrument, not like a record store) store and tell them. They will likely show you how to restring your guitar. It’s not difficult, but is easier to learn if someone shows you.
Buy a new pack of strings, if you’re playing a lot, you should be changing them ALL out at LEAST once a month, more if you’re playing hard. People who play in bands and stuff change strings constantly, like before every gig. It’s SO not a big deal.
Order new strings from http://www.samash.com or someplace like that.
Silly goose, get more guitar strings at the music store. Take in your guitar and let them show you how to string it.
Dont panic…..so, your string broke, its ok…..first thing to do is get your self down to the local music shop and buy yourself a new set of 6 strings. your best to change one string at a time, so start with your bass string (the thickest), turn the peg to loosen the string and when it is slack you should be able to pull out the peg holding the string in the bridge, then unravel it from the peg. Get your new bass string, one end will have a small ring on it this goes into the hole on the bridge then reinsert the peg. the other end needs threading into the tuning peg, pull it tight and loop it over itself, take up the slack on the string, and when it is taut repeat the steps for the other 5 (or in your case 4) strings….sorted.
Take to a music store. They will be glad to put a new one on and tune it for you. You really need to learn how to do this for yourself! There are many ways to go about this. Strings will loose tone after a while and need to be change every couple months anyway. Keep them dry with a rag before putting back in case, this will prolong the life of strings and keep them from rusting. Insure at least 3 turms on the post. When new strings are first put on, pull hard outwardly a few times on the string to set tension on post. Tune using harmonics…7 th fret?… (except B string).
Rough tune first, then repeat as many times as necessary. Tuning 1 string perfectly first does NOT work because tuning 1 string changes the neck tension, affecting the tuning of all the other strings! If done as above, strings will Stay in tune for weeks unless wide temperature changes!
you shouldnt be worrying about chords yet if he hasnt taught you how to tune your axe ,
get a different teacher anyway tuning in drop d [which is what that song is in] just match the tone of your lowest string to your 3 string down starting from the top of the fret board[the part that is facing your head] normal tuning i eadgbe just match the the tone it will be slightly lower of course so dont over tighten
Don’t beat yourself up! Strings will break! Just throw the string away. Find some Ernie Ball strings http://www.ernieball.com/ They are good ones. Look on youtube on how to string guitars http://youtube.com/results?search_query=stringing+guitar You can also get yourself a tuner to help you tune it. Check out Musicians Friend for some great deals http://www.musiciansfriend.com/
If you need some more help I’m sure you can take it in to a music store and the people there will be glad to help you!
Any good music shop should have single strings and usually will show you how to put it on.
I think that song is in “dropped D tuning”, you lower the thick E string to D. i.e. DADGBE, Thick to thin. Don’t tighten up to D, loosen DOWN to D.
A quick method in getting the D string in tune is to fret it at the seventh fret and tune to unison with the A string. (the string next to it!)
If your strings are old, you might think about changing them all.
Check out Frets.com, they have instructions on how you can do this yourself.
