Best Debut Records of 2009
The XX – “XX”
This group of young, melancholy kids students that met at the Elliott School in London have blown up this year thanks to the sexy, and low-key debut record “XX” and the critical and peer acclaim from all over the map. The greatest thing about The XX is that they aren’t afraid to mix in modern American R&B melodies and lyrical themes into their indie-rock meets minimal dream pop style. Hopefully they can continue the huge success of their debut and beat the sophomore slump with a powerful second record that somehow manages to quench expectations.
Passion Pit – “Manners”
Originally the bedroom product of Michael Angelakos that he started so he could woo his girlfriend, Passion Pit evolved into a full fledged band with the internet success of “Sleepyhead,” a sparkling little nugget of pop bliss that catapulted Passion Pit into the blogosphere. The band’s deft mix of electronic elements, train horn samples and live instrumentation plays to their strengths at arrangements, but it is Angelakos sometimes sophomoric lyrics that threaten to drag the band down. His falsetto yelp can also be an acquired taste, but the band is worth a shot.
Girls – “The Album”
Another band that’s success can largely be attributed to the internet, Girls originally put out a lo-fi seven inch single of the album opener “Lust for Life” which garnered the attention of the internet and pushed them into rerecording many of their songs in a studio setting and releasing the album in the latter half of 2009 to critical acclaim. A national tour and a few NSFW music videos followed and Girls are poised to be one of the most critically acclaimed new bands of 2009.
